I loved this showcase on Johannes Vermeer I remember that whan I saw his art work while I was in high school I thought that his works were by Rembrandt. Vermeer had a baroque style that was drenched in both light and dark. This Dutch painter lived during the golden age of Netherlands art. His art grew and gained powerful followers during a time the Netherlands experienced an political, economic and cultural growth. Vermeer’s body of work is small compared to other artists. His works number around 33-35 pieces. He painted other works, now lost, only known by ancient records of art auctions . Like Rembrandt, Vermeer was best known as a political artist and his work represented historical elements It was his beautiful paintings based in the everyday people and things. My favorite work by Jan Vermeer is the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring. In life he was a successful painter, but not of the ilk of Rembrandt.. He had a life of ease, perhaps because the small number of paintings they produced, and his death left his wife and debts eleven children.
